What is the American Opportunity Tax Credit? This is a tax credit that will help parents and students pay for college expenses. Under the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act (ARRA), more parents and students will qualify for this tax credit.
The Hope Credit
The American Opportunity Credit modifies the existing Hope Credit. This actually makes the Hope Credit available to even more taxpayers and includes many with higher incomes. You may not owe tax at all and some of these credits also apply to you as well.
Course Materials
This new credit has added more course materials to the list of qualifying expenses. Here’s some more good news. The credit can be claimed for four post secondary education years instead of two.
The best time to go back to school is during an economic recession. How many times have you heard that saying? The annual maximum credit is $2,500 per student for those who are eligible to qualify. This is a $700 increase from the Hope Credit.
The Full Credit
If your Adjusted Gross Income is $80,000 or less ($160,000 for married couples filing a joint return) then you will be eligible for the full credit. If your income exceeds those limits then, hey, you can afford to pay for the college expenses yourself right?
I guess that’s what the creators of this credit were thinking because once you pass those financial limits then the credit is phased out for those taxpayers.

The New Orleans Saints are a professional American football team based in New Orleans, Louisiana. The Saints play football in the South Division of the National Football Conference (NFC) in the National Football League.
The New Orleans Saints were founded in 1967 as an expansion team and played their home games at Tulane Stadium up to the 1974 season. The Saints went more than 10 years before they were able to complete a season with a .500 record, two decades before having a winning season, and over 40 years before making it to the Super Bowl. The team’s first successful years were from 1987–1992, when the team made the playoffs four times and had winning records in the non-playoff seasons. In the 2000 season, the Saints conquered the then-defending Super Bowl champion St. Louis Rams for the team’s initial playoff win.
The 2009 season was the team’s best season. The 11/30/09 Monday Night Football game vs. the New England Patriots, the game in which the team went to an 11–0 record for the first time in franchise history, was the 2nd highest rated cable program to date. After becoming 13–0 with their win against the Atlanta Falcons, it marked the Saints’ best start to a season in its franchise history. The final result clinched an NFC playoff berth, a bye in the first round of the NFL playoffs. By winning their first 13 games, the Saints in addition set the record for the longest undefeated season opening (13-0) by an NFC team since the AFL–NFL merger, eclipsing the previous record (12-0) held by the 1985 Chicago Bears. The Saints advanced to the 2009 NFC Championship game where they defeated the Minnesota Vikings 31-28 in overtime, sending the team to their first Super Bowl appearance in franchise history.

There’s no doubt people like getting goods gratis. If you include the word free in your headline somewhere, the ad is more likely to attraction attention. In truth, the most profitable campaigns I’ve read always had free sticking out boldly somewhere in the ad. There are some important things to remember however.
First, if you trick people into reading your ad using a massive FREE at the top, then don’t deliver on your offer, your campaign will definitely fail and your reputation will take a hit. You may also get a call from the regulators. For example, I once read an ad headed with the word FREE. The word took up a third of the ad. Underneath it said: soft drink with every main meal over $20. Big deal I thought.
Needless to say, that was something of a disappointment. It makes you feel cheated and misled, which in turn will make you even less likely to visit the restaurant, call the business or whatever it is the offer is trying to encourage you to do as a result of reading it.
If you use the word free in such a bold way, make sure that the offer is truly something remarkable, or else the whole thing will backfire and people will be turned off dealing with you (when they were neutral about buying from you before). Not all publicity is good publicity as Tiger Woods has recently found out.
Secondly, if you are offering something completely FREE (that is, with no obligation to purchase anything else) be prepared for a surprise.
I remember running a promotion with a florist. We handed out fliers offering a free flower. No one took us up on the offer. I was shocked. It was only later that I worked it out. Depending on the product or service, people are often too embarrassed to claim something free. It seems people who like buying flowers, like BUYING flowers. Free is not an attraction to them.
Maybe the promotion should have said: A free box of Swiss chocolates with every bunch of roses? All very well in 20-20 hindsight.
It’s strange but you have a better chance with a `free x when you buy a y’ appeal than you do with a `free x no strings attached’ approach. People just don’t expect to get something for absolutely nothing. They are cynical and mistrusting.
Free is probably the most over-used term in advertising, so you need to remember to only pull it out of the toolbox when you’ve got something pretty amazing to give away and, only when it is tied in with something else. The offer has to be unbelievable but credible, if you get my drift.
